Adhesions - Bands of fibrous (scar) tissue that may form at sites of prior operation.

Anemia - Too few red blood cells in the blood stream, resulting in insufficient oxygen delivered to organs. Can result from such causes as blood loss or lack of enough iron in the diet.

Bariatric - The branch of medicine concerned with the management (prevention or control) of obesity and its related diseases.

Body Mass Index - One of the anthropometric measures of body mass. It has the highest correlation with skin fold thickness or body density.

Comorbidities - The presence of coexisting or additional diseases that are a direct result, or are related to the primary disease.

CT scan - (Computerized Tomography) Specialized X-ray technique involving computer re-assimilation of a series of x-ray images taken in cross section. you is required to lay in a cylinder (tube-like) structure that is open at both ends for a short period of time.

Cum Laude - from the Latin meaning “with praise”, it means “with distinction”. Most commonly used with reference to graduation, i.e. “graduate cum laude” means to graduate with distinction.

Deep Vein Thrombosis - (DVT) Blood clot that develops in a large vein in the body (most commonly in the leg). Following are just a few of the number of things that predispose a person to developing DVT: obesity, long periods of immobilization (plane trip or long car ride), orthopedic surgery, trauma, pregnancy, and cancer.

Dehydration - Condition of inadequate water balance in the body due to excessive water loss and/or inadequate water intake.

Dumping Syndrome - a complex reaction that may occur in patients who eat high calorie foods after a gastric bypass operation. Symptoms may include: nausea, vomiting, sweating, diarrhea, fainting, and fast heart rate.

EGD - (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) Procedure done under sedation where a flexible lighted fiber-optic camera is placed through the mouth and passed into the stomach and first part of the small intestine. This can be used for diagnosis and treatment of certain conditions.

Hernia - Weakness in a body area allowing the contents of one cavity to push out through the weakness. This may simply cause discomfort or unsightly appearance; however, it may be as serious as a strangulation of the intestine.

Ideal Body Weight - Calculation of an average weight based on height and sex.

Men: (Devine Formula-1974)
Ideal body weight (in kg) = 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft.

Women: (Robinson Formula-1983)
Ideal body weight (in kg) = 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 ft.

Laparoscopic - Performed using a laparoscope (a thin fiber-optic scope introduced into the body for diagnostic and surgical purposes). This type of surgery typically uses a series of small (1cm to 5cm) incisions to accomplish the same task as the traditional “open” technique, which generally requires larger incisions.

NIH - (National Institute of Health) The National Institutes of Health is the steward of medical and behavioural research for the Nation. Its mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behaviour of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability. The goals of the agency are as follows: 1) foster fundamental creative discoveries, innovative research strategies, and their applications as a basis to advance significantly the Nation's capacity to protect and improve health; 2) develop, maintain, and renew scientific human and physical resources that will assure the Nation's capability to prevent disease; 3) expand the knowledge base in medical and associated sciences in order to enhance the Nation's economic well-being and ensure a continued high return on the public investment in research; and 4) exemplify and promote the highest level of scientific integrity, public accountability, and social responsibility in the conduct of science.

Peptic Ulceration - An erosion (wearing away) of the lining of the stomach or first portion of the small intestine.

Pneumonia - Inflammation or infection of the lung.

Pulmonary Embolus - Blood clot that forms in a large vein in the body and breaks free, traveling to the lung. This blocks the normal flow of blood to the lungs.

Stricture - A decrease in the size of a passage through a tubular shaped structure.
